AGENDA
Opening Remarks and Speed Sessions 1
10 a.m.-10:45 a.m.
Keynote Learning has no limits, Dr. Chadia Abras
11 a.m.-12 p.m.
Keynote Speaker: Chadia Abras, Director of Institutional Assessment at John Hopkins University
Description
The Center for Applied Special Technology or CAST created the Universal Design for Learning framework based on one notion, "learning has no limits". This is where UDL advocates for learning for all.
Addressing the whole learning environment through an inclusive design is key. Imperatively, advocating for access to all students regardless of race, culture, language, abilities, needs, and learning preferences, in order to support student engagement in their own learning, enabling them to become self-directed learners. It is about equity and social justice and meeting the learners where they are. Research has shown that students learn best when they are engaged, where empathy and authentic learning are central to enabling the learner to sustain the engagement. The goal for engagement is to develop expert learners who are purposeful and motivated, resourceful and knowledgeable, and strategic and goal oriented, regardless of capabilities, abilities, and preferences.
The keynote highlights the UDL framework, how it connects to personalized instruction, applies to teaching and learning, and how formative assessments can guide the framework through authentic activities. We will also engage in hands-on activities applying what was presented in settings familiar to the participants.
Speed Sessions II
12:15 p.m.-12:45 p.m.

The Civic Circle's Program Overview:
The Civic Circle's after-school enrichment program uses music and the arts to teach seven civic skills that we call "steps to democracy" to students in Eastern Montgomery County, helping close a well-documented equity gap in civic learning and engagement.
Students learn civility (Listen!), news literacy (Learn!), voting (Choose!), voluntarism (Join!), advocacy (Speak!), organizing (Act!), and public service (Lead!), empowering them to exercise civic clout in their schools, communities, nation, and world.
The Civic Circle also puts on free concerts to get students and families excited about voting and democracy and produces educational videos that make our program available to teachers and parents everywhere.
The Civic Circle's one-of-a-kind, equity-informed, multicultural program fills several important gaps in civic learning. We target elementary school-age children often overlooked in the Social Studies curriculum, we use performance-based learning to connect with diverse students, and we teach students the civic skills they will need to become voters and leaders in their communities. For more information, please visit www.theciviccircle.org.
Anyone who is loves working with children, and responsible would be encouraged to apply for vacancies at the CC.

IRC Silver Spring is operating hybrid due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Spring 2023 interns may work partly in-person or entirely remote, depending on the program. The situation will be reevaluated as things evolve.
I've listed the titles and a brief description of each internship below. You can find the full description by going to https://rescue.csod.com/ats/careersite/search.aspx?site=1&c=rescue and filtering by City (Silver Spring) and Employee Category (Intern). Prospective interns will use that link to apply. We strongly encourage interested applicants to apply for more than one program. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) was founded at the behest of Albert Einstein in 1933 to assist people fleeing from persecution. Since then, the IRC has grown and works all over the world providing humanitarian support. In Silver Spring, the IRC works with refugees the moment they step off the plane to help them get situated and become self-sufficient members of their new community.
IRC internships give interns the opportunity to work directly with refugees to teach them or help them accomplish tasks needed to live successfully in the US. We offer 15 unique internships that offer a wide variety of opportunities to develop different skills and gain experience including:

“艺术家不能失败;成为其中一员就是成功。——著名社会学家查尔斯·库利。< / p >
Montgomery College part-time professor Allen Bentley is a professional artist. He paints, and he draws. He said his work has a specific focus. He enjoys expressing the active forces that create motion and connection. He has produced numerous pieces of memorable art, some of which showcase couples dancing, people sailing, and even a pair having a pillow fight. Two art galleries, Bridgette Mayer Gallery in Philadelphia and Jo Fleming Contemporary Art in Annapolis represent and exhibit Bentley's work.
Bentley grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Western Carolina University and his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife lived in upstate New York for a period of time, but when she received a job offer to work as a staff scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, they moved to the D.C. region.
He began teaching at Montgomery College nine years ago although he had previously taught at other institutions for more than a decade before coming to the College. This included teaching at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia.
Bentley currently works in the Art Department on the Rockville campus and teaches several courses that include Figure Drawing I, Figure Drawing II, Introduction to Drawing, and Professional Practice which teaches students how to best market their work. He is an accomplished artist, and brings the same level of expertise and enthusiasm into the classroom.
"I believe that a part of teaching is about helping the students find out more about themselves. I can teach drawing or the business of art. That is easy. That is structure. Inspiring passion about something and providing them with challenges and a supportive environment to see what they can really do is the good part," Bentley said. "I love guiding people. That is my real job," he added.
The College has recognized his outstanding work in the classroom. He received the Exceptional Service Teaching Award from the College in 2015. It is an award he cherishes to this day.
Teaching and speaking before a roomful of students is not easy for Bentley. That is because he stutters.
"Some days are good and some are bad. With communication being the biggest part of my job having that challenge is tough. What students learn from that is compassion and understanding. I do not hide it. I use it as a teaching tool. I am open and honest which serves as a model for how to embrace their challenges or what makes them stand out," Bentley explained.
He loves seeing his students succeed. He had one student several years ago who struggled mightily to demonstrate the concepts he taught in class. "More than once, she ripped her drawing off, threw it away, and left the room. She would come back, breathe, and start again. I could see she knew it all but just could not make it happen on the paper. Counseling her taught me a lot about slowing down and being a better guide. One day it clicked for her. She had her breakthrough and suddenly everything worked. I am still proud of that, both for her stubbornness and my patience," Bentley said.
Teaching itself is a learning process, and Bentley has had many mentors who led him to become the professor he is today. His mentor in college, Robert Godfrey, instilled in him the drive to better himself as both a painter and teacher.
"He taught me to teach with larger concepts than the material. He taught me to broaden my mind," Bentley explained.
He is grateful to all of the people who have helped inspire him along his journey including his current department chair, Tendai Johnson. Bentley says it is important to teach from the heart, and when students leave his classroom he hopes they realize how much they can accomplish and have a better understanding of themselves.
"I aim to build a sense of community in my classroom. Students are required to work together to clean the studio after each session which helps foster cooperation. I require them to give feedback to each other on their drawings or writing. I teach them that we are all in this together. Also I use comedy, open dialogue, and good music to help them enjoy the process of learning," Bentley said.
